"Wild World of Compound Eyes"
Prof. Greg Schmidt, PhD
Research Professor The Institute of Optics, University of Rochester
Abstract
What are compound eyes and why do insects and crustaceans use this completely different optical vision system from our own? This talk will answer these questions as well as present some other fascinating compound eye adaptations found in nature. Be prepared for lots of creepy crawly close ups of our bug eyed friends, and some bio-inspiration for the next generation micro-vision systems coming soon to a drone near you.
Greg Schmidt received his PhD from The Institute of Optics, University of Rochester. His thesis focused on the modeling and design of bio-inspired compound lens arrays and fabricating polymer tapered gradient-index (GRIN) lenses that mimic the GRIN lenses found nature. After graduating in 2009 he started as a Research Engineer at The Institute of Optics and in 2019 became a Research Professor. His primary focus is research in Freeform GRIN optics covering material properties, fabrication, design, and metrology. Other significant research efforts have focused on lightfield optics, non-imaging design for illumination, and optics for high concentration solar thermal and photovoltaic systems. He teaches the graduate level courses for optical laboratory and instrumentation & metrology.
No tickets will be distributed. Confirmed reservations will be placed on a list.
