A well ground optic is half polished

John Escolas, Escolas Optics Consulting

Abstract

Optical surface polishing is a complex process that involves precision machining and material removal to achieve the desired surface finish and quality. It requires a deep understanding of the when, where, and how much material to remove.

Various factors influence the efficiency and effectiveness of optical surface polishing, including the choice of polishing materials, abrasives, and slurries. The interaction between the tool and the surface, as well as the applied pressure and motion, also plays a crucial role in determining the final surface quality.

Understanding the science behind optical surface polishing, engineers can gain insights into the mechanisms of material removal, the formation of surface defects, and the optimization of polishing parameters. This knowledge can help in troubleshooting polishing issues and improving the overall quality of precision optics.

About the speaker

I’m John Escolas from Escolas Optics Consulting. My mission is to help businesses thrive in the optics and photonics industry. With over 20 years of experience, I've navigated every corner of this dynamic field—from hands-on engineering to leading operations and managing client relationships. My diverse background equips me to deliver consulting services that are not only expert but also perfectly aligned with my client’s specific needs. I aim to achieve excellence and push the boundaries of what's possible in our optics industry.

I began my journey in the glass industry as a process engineer, diving deep into the complex and meticulous world of optics manufacturing. Early on, I had the privilege of working alongside some of the most skilled opticians in the field, who imparted invaluable insights into the finer details of fabricating precision optics. This hands-on experience allowed me to build a strong foundation in the craft, learning the nuances that set exceptional optical components apart.
