Optical Surface Metrology and Automated Scratch/Dig Inspection with DIOPTIC's Computer Generated Holograms and ARGOS matrix

Katie Dunn, PhD

Abstract

Optical surface metrology and defect inspection are critical for quality assurance during the manufacturing of optical components. For surface metrology, computer generated holograms are commonly used in interferometric testing but require complex alignment processes. Diffractive Fizeau Null Lenses (DFNL's) create the reference beam and a perpendicular object wavefront in a single element, removing the need for a reference sphere. DFNL's mount directly to commercial interferometers and use integrated alignment features to simplify the alignment process. For surface defect inspection, the subjectivity of manual-visual inspection results and shortages of skilled optical technicians have prompted increased demand for automated scratch/dig inspection. The ARGOS matrix conducts automated batch inspection of optical elements according to ISO 10110-7 and outputs detailed inspection reports for each element.  Dark-field imaging combined with image processing algorithms are used to automatically quantify surface defects. Both DFNL's for simple alignment and the ARGOS matrix for automated defect inspection provide accurate inspection results while reducing hands-on technician time, therefore reducing costs for optical manufacturers.

About the speaker

Kaitlin Dunn (Katie) is the US Branch Manager and a Senior Optical Engineer at DIOPTIC, a German optics company specializing in custom inspection and metrology solutions. Katie is based in Rochester, NY, where she conducts both technical and business development for DIOPTIC's ARGOS matrix for automated surface defect inspection. Katie received her PhD in Optics from the University of Rochester's Institute of Optics in 2023 and was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. She earned her B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Physics from Clarkson University in 2017.
