About the speaker
Tony Whitman is the chief systems engineer at L3Harris Technologies for NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Optical Telescope Assembly.
Whitman’s career at the Space Systems sector within L3Harris’ Space and Airborne Systems segment in Rochester, New York (formerly, a division of Eastman Kodak) began in 2002.
The Space and Airborne Systems sector offers an extensive portfolio of solutions in Earth observation, weather, geospatial, space protection, small satellites, electronic warfare, avionics, C4I systems and intelligence solutions from advanced sensors and payloads, ground processing and information analytics.
Previously, Whitman held roles as the lead systems engineer for the integration and test equipment for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope program. In addition, he was the Cryogenic Optical Test Director on the Webb program.
Prior to this role, Whitman developed optical components and optical systems at the Rochester Photonics Corporation. Earlier in his career, he was part of the optical metrology team for the Cosmic Background Explorer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. Other career roles include the former Holotek Ltd. of Rochester and the former General Electric Electronics Laboratory in Syracuse, New York. Whitman earned his Master of Science in Optics from the University of Rochester and a Bachelor of Science in Applied and Engineering Physics at Cornell University.
