The Modern Quantum Ecosystem and Its Application Space
In the early 1900's, Niels Bohr, Albert Einstein and others laid the foundations of quantum mechanics -- nature's instruction book for the smallest particles of matter. Almost all of 20th Century’s technology exploits the semiclassical properties of quantum mechanics. Today we are actively exploiting the stranger parts of quantum mechanics to build a whole new era of quantum technologies. These quantum 2.0 technologies exploit the fruits of basic research resulting from Quantum Information Science – the confluence of Information Science and Quantum Mechanics. Quantum information scientists have already convincingly demonstrated the long-term feasibility of these new approaches and now there are an emerging number of niche applications, including NIST’s own quantum logic clock as well as revolutionary new approaches to sensing, communication, and computing.
The talk will begin by describing the difference between these two quantum eras and then describe the evolving quantum ecosystem. That ecosystem includes investments by national governments, venture capitalists, high technology companies that have resulted in a rapidly evolving capabilities and numerous new quantum start-ups. The talk will then describe some of the known applications coming out of the quantum ecosystem and move on to probable applications, some key demonstrations and conclude with futuristic applications that touch on fundamental questions of the universe and capabilities that could have tremendous implications for society and the economy.
