Abstract The process by which an image is formed, processed, and displayed can be conceptualized as a chain of physical events called the imaging chain. By mathematically modeling the imaging chain, we can gain insight into the relationship between the camera design parameters and the resulting image quality. The mathematical models are used to design digital cameras and help us to understand apparent anomalies that appear in images, which can be valuable for exposing photofakery.

Biography Robert D. Fiete is Chief Technologist at ITT Exelis Geospatial Systems. He received his B.S. in physics and mathematics from Iowa State University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in optical sciences from the University of Arizona. In 1987 he joined Eastman Kodak’s Federal Systems Division and managed the Imaging Systems Analysis group, responsible for developing and assessing the image quality of novel imaging system designs and advanced processing algorithms. Dr. Fiete was an adjunct professor at the Center for Imaging Science at Rochester Institute of Technology, has chaired conferences on imaging science and optics, and has supported the U.S. Department of Justice on cases involving photofakery. He wrote the books Modeling the Imaging Chain of Digital Cameras, and Formation of a Digital Image: The Imaging Chain simplified. He has also authored over 30 technical papers, received 11 patents, and was awarded the Rudolf Kingslake Medal by SPIE.
