Congratulations - Recipient of the 2026 Bob Novak Scholarship: Karla Acosta-Cabrera

The Rochester Section of OPTICA is proud to announce Karla Acosta‑Cabrera as the recipient of the 2026 Bob Novak Scholarship.

Karla is a standout student in the Optical Systems Technology (OST) program at Monroe Community College, known for her resilience, dedication, and academic drive. A recent immigrant from Cuba, Karla arrived in Rochester two years ago without speaking English. She began her MCC journey through ESOL courses with the simple goal of becoming employable. What started as language study evolved into a full academic pursuit once she discovered MCC’s strong programs and supportive community.

Motivated by Rochester’s pivotal role in the optics industry, Karla enrolled in the OST program and is currently working toward her A.A.S. degree, aiming to graduate in May 2027. She is especially passionate about manufacturing, metrology, and research, and plans to enter the optics workforce immediately after graduation to deepen her professional experience and discover her long-term specialty.

Karla describes receiving this scholarship as a moment of overwhelming joy and pride. For her, it is not only critical financial support, but a strong affirmation of her potential. Balancing full-time studies, part-time work, and responsibilities to family members in Cuba, Karla continues to excel thanks to her relentless motivation and the opportunities this scholarship makes possible.

She expresses deep gratitude to the donors and the MCC community, and looks forward to one day supporting students like herself—those with drive, but limited means—so they too can realize their goals. Karla’s story is a powerful example of perseverance and purpose, and a reminder of the impact scholarships can have in shaping the future of the optics industry.
